The Bails 4 mei 2007
Hi all
A great start to the season with Kieviten winning four out of four warm up matches. On tour we had three reasonably close games and came out on top in all of them despite only having 9 or 10 men on the field most of the time.
De Kieviten 218-8 (Hamed 73 no, John 63 no, Chris 46) beat Sidcup (201-9)
De Kieviten 175-8 (John 57, Hamed 28, Ben 25, JW 17*, Jarvis 18) beat Roses CC 145 – 9
Menorca CC 165 lost to Kieviten 168-8 (Hamed 25, Jarvis 45, JW 23* ) Despite being only 8 down this was our last wicket as Ed had to disappear to the airport before batting!
Last Sunday we entertained VVV from the Hoofdklasse and won a thriller.
Next Sunday 6th of May the action starts for real as the 1st team kick off their league season with an away game at Hercules (Utrecht). The second team get their season underway on Hemelvaartsdag Thu 17 May.
All of this means it's time to start outdoor training. Let’s get the season off on a good night with a strong turnout. All playing members please send a message to kievitencricket@hotmail.com to advise your availability for the game this Sunday.
Cheers,
John
SECOND’S GOT PROMOTED AFTER ALL – WE’RE PLAYING 2A!
Whereas in the last news bulletin we informed you of Kieviten two’s playing in 3A league the next day we got a phone call from KNCB asking us if we would mind getting promoted to 2A as we ended up second in the league last year again missing promotion.
However we managed to get hold the story behind this as Matthew ‘Ruby’ Birch, former Kieviten member and current member of Heerlen CC picked up this news and contacted us. It appears that Heerlen CC has had enough of playing in the KNCB league and decided to play in Belgium this year. Perhaps we owe this opportunity to Heerlen CC but our appreciation goes to the players of our second team for pushing it hard till the end last year.
The last couple of years the seconds were runners up on more than one occasion as there was always another team to beat them in the end. Most of the times that were ‘new’ clubs 1st XI marching up the league finding their proper level.
Especially last year was difficult as the seconds were not given the opportunity by other clubs to play all of there matches and had to miss two.
Well done boys!
So this year’s squads are playing:
- Overgangsklasse A +Overgangsklasse B
- Nato (NC3)
- British School
- BP
NEW WEBSITE: WWW.KIEVITEN.NL
Last year De Kieviten has had its website remodelled. As we didn’t get the codes at first we weren’t able to change its contents for a long time.
This week we got them and are now putting in info. With our club’s history and the many people that have come across it we want to reflect our clubs spirit with this website and are looking for some good stories or photo’s to include.
There will be a full Dutch and English section. At the moment we’re working on the Dutch part but soon start on the English. Only relevant issues of the club will be exactly translated. Original stories will be printed as send to us.
We’ve got a lot of ideas but appreciate your opinion too. Please give us your advice or send us good stories or photo’s that we can use for our website.
Come on let’s not be boring and send us copy or comments and make this website together!
The ones working on the website now are:
John Colbran -
Hanny Swart
Jan Willem de Groot
Willem van Ellemeet see to it that info can be found in the Dutch as well as English version.
ALSO: On the site you’ll find a link to our Kieviten Yahoo Group. Don’t forget to register first. The next day you’ll be able to get on the group and get in touch with both current and former players. Spread the word!
MALIK SHREDS THE VVV ATTACK!
An exciting 40/40 friendly match was played this past Sunday between Kieviten 1st’s and the Hoofdklasse team VVV of Amsterdam. The toss was won by Kieviten and VVV were asked to bat on a gloriously sunny afternoon. In the first 4 overs there were 2 wickets taken by Hamed both caught by Malik in the slips. It seemed that at this rate the VVV would be lucky to post a total of 150 at this stage. However, this was not to be as Hafeez (95) and Sidku (60*) put on a great partnership to help get VVV out of the pit they had dug themselves into (Saclia 28). Tidy bowling by Seisun 1/38/8, Altaf 3/34/8, Malik 0/38/8 and Salman 2/26/6 restricted the VVV to 275-8. Steyn managed 3 catches, 2 of them being dived and scooped off the ground.
Kieviten was faced with just under 7 an over to win the match and openers Seisun and Altaf managed to do a good job by seeing off the first 7 overs of fierce pace bowling (including many a bouncer called for wide). Altaf unfortunately was 1st to go for 1 and Seisun followed shortly afterwards for 13. Malik and Salman then settled the damaged by hammering the attack of VVV with a 136 partnership, Salman (70). It was always going to be a tough call to get the runs but once Salman departed, captain Malik (125*) continued his aggressive attack pulverising 6’s and 4’s all over the ground. He was supported at the end by Ali (28*) to get the winning runs (277-6) with 5 balls to spare of the innings.
All in all it was a great victory and total to chase for Kieviten who were playing with 9 players towards the end of the game (Nissar Ali injured after bowling 1.2 overs). Man of the match definitely Malik for his blistering 125* and fine fielding and bowling efforts, can one ask much more of this young gladiator for the rest of the season? Watch this space as I predict a runs and wickets fiesta to come.
Martin Steyn
TRAINING EVERY THURSDAY NIGHT AT 19.00
Christian has returned for a fourth season at Kieviten with his fingers in full working order! He has had a good winter in Cape Town and is now back in Holland. Obviously it's a huge boost for the club to have such a motivated and motivating coach on hand, and his presence in the first team will be a real boost.
Apart from the usual club activities Chris will run his personal coaching program again. Anyone interested just call Chris direct on 06-25218867 and book his class.
The last couple of months we’ve trained indoors. Now with the sun out and our matches ahead we move outside and train every Thursday evening on the main pitch at Kieviten. Training starts at 19.00pm.
After training we’d like people to stick around for a while and perhaps having a late supper together. Soon Sky TV will be re-installed and we will be able to watch the highlights over a beer too.
All are welcome to train with us. Transport shouldn’t be much of a problem. The ones that don’t go to the club direct will meet at Central Train Station Den Haag and will take you to the ground. (Only a fifteen minutes drive.) Just let us know by giving a call or sending an email and we’ll pick you up.
For the ones that like to train more than once a week a special training session is held on Tuesday night (19.00 pm). That indoor session we train batting with a bowling machine.
We see you at practice.
SPONSORING
This year Angelina Abrahams from the Difference (the bar at Kieviten) has kindly offered to sponsor all second team match balls. Apart from the fact that she and her team take care of us on match days and after training we thank her much for this kind gesture.
Anyone interested in supporting our club can either join the Old Kievits (€ 50 per annum) or sponsor a match ball (first XI and 20/20 league - € 30 / second XI or ladies € 20,=).
On the site you’ll find a list of ball sponsors and Old Kievit’s that have committed for this year so far.

INTRODUCTION NEW PLAYERS:
Thomas D.E. Lake (UK) – 21 year old spin bowler and right handed batsman will play half a season for the second team. Tom is currently for Shell and found our club through Marty Buttigieg (our Kieviten/PGS-scout at Shell). In July he’ll return to the UK.
Arshad Ali – (PAK) 29 year old medium fast bowler with Malinga’s slingshot like action and right handed batsman. Arshad was looking for an ambitious and more serious cricket club. Last year he briefly played with Shanti Dal but was never formally registered and therefore transferable to De Kieviten. Arshad came to our club with the help of our first team captain Malik Tanveer Hussain.
Karn Singh – (IND) 17 year old son of the First Secretary of Indian Embassy but also student of the American School with rock star attitude. Karn came halfway last season and played a couple of matches with the seconds. With the help of Chris Seisun’s personal coaching class he’s now back to show us his new abilities and is ready to step into the spotlight.
Tony Krijger – (NL) 36 year old hasn’t played for a while but soon show us his skills. Last night he rocked up with his wife Catherine and two kids at the club and was signed up after feeding him a couple beers and a plate of spaghetti.
We also received an application from a former player of Asian Shaheen. That club was expelled by the KNCB last year for not paying their bills. This 28 year old Sajjad Ali wants to join De Kieviten and will surely be an asset to the first team as he’s a fine spinner. We’re sorting business out with the KNCB and try to bring him on board for this season.
Lads we all welcome you to De Kieviten and hope you’ll enjoy your time with us!
CLUB OUTFITS AND EQUIPMENT
Playing at higher levels requires better discipline, which starts by looking as a team on the field. In order to set the standard high the club requires all Kieviten Players to wear proper outfits on the field. Priority here starts with wearing a club shirt with logo and cap.
New players or players that have lost or damaged theirs can obtain new at the club on match days or after training. As much money is involved and we run on a tight budget we need to keep stock as low as possible but meet the demand. In the past each Kieviten cricket team used to have their team kitbag. As time went by the state of bats and pads became of lesser quality and players started preferring bringing their own. Eventually we abandoned the idea of a kitbag and nowadays all players play with personal kit.
Every year new players present themselves at our club and are relying on using sweaty gloves and pads or messing up other people’s bats. We therefore reinstall the plan of having a club kitbag again. However this time we invite members to donate old (yet good quality) bats and pads to the club for this kitbag. Please consider this bag also to be as a back up if personal equipment falls out.
FRIENDLIES
Not only playing regular league matches and participation in the new 20/20 league we also intend to organise a couple of friendlies this summer too.
Perhaps no English touring team but the Menorcan club we toured to last April is now considering visiting Holland this summer. It appears that Menorca’s Dave is visiting his Dutch friends, who own clubs on the “Wallen” in Amsterdam. He was wondering if he should bring his team mates too and checked with me whether we would be interested in playing. Not sure but I believe he was referring to playing cricket. ?!!?!
Anyway this summer there’s the annual match against SGS held on August 22nd.
Ever since we’ve started playing SGS in the new format (having old players around) some of you have expressed their wish to have an Old versus New Kieviten cricket match. Recently we discussed this more detailed and are now considering in organising this match. In order to be sure that we have enough players on the day we want people to let us know what they think about this plan and put forward their availability. Its success depends on you!
Finally my hockey team MCH Voorhout (and Frans van Egmond’s too) played their first cricket match ever years ago and are keen to have another go at it. Anyone interested to chuck a couple of ball at these hockey players please let me know. For us this could be a good opportunity to expand our membership with a couple of pinch hitters. Further details will be announced later.
KIEVITEN HOCKEY UPDATE
(I read this in the hockey magazine of the Kieviten)
HEREN 1 KAMPIOEN !!
Red.: But then!
Nieuwe trainer/coach Heren 1
Cricket?!??!?
(Red.: Additional info for the ones that don’t know Marc. Except for maybe one season this loud mouth has played cricket with VCC for all of his life.)
GOLF
A nun walks into Mother Superior's office and plonks down into a chair. She lets out a sigh heavy with frustration.
"What troubles you, Sister?" asks the Mother Superior. "I thought this was the day you spent with your family."
"It was", sighed the Sister. "And I went to play golf with my brother. We try to play golf as often as we can. You know I was quite a talented golfer before I devoted my life to Christ."
"I seem to recall that", the Mother Superior agreed. "So I take it your day of recreation was not relaxing?"
"Far from it", snorted the Sister. "In fact, I even took the Lord's name in vain today!"
"Goodness, Sister!" gasped the Mother Superior, astonished. "You must tell me all about it!"
"Well, we were on the fifth tee...and this hole is a monster,Mother~ 540 yard Par 5, with a nasty dogleg left and a hidden green and I hit the drive of my life. I creamed it. The sweetest swing I ever made. And it's flying straight and true, right along the line I wanted...and it hits a bird in mid-flight not 100 yards off the tee!"
"Oh my!", commiserated the Mother. "How unfortunate! But surely that didn't make you blaspheme, Sister!"
"No, that wasn't it," admitted Sister. "While I was still trying to fathom what had happened, this squirrel runs out of the woods, grabs my ball and runs off down the fairway!"
"Oh, that would have made me blaspheme!" sympathized Mother.
"But I didn't, Mother Superior!" sobbed the Sister. "And I was so proud of myself! And while I was pondering whether this was a sign from God, this hawk swoops out of the sky and grabs the squirrel and flies off, with my ball still clutched in its paws!"
"So that's when you cursed," said the Mother with a knowing smile.
"No, that wasn't it either," cried the Sister, anguished, "because as the hawk started to fly out of sight, the squirrel started struggling, and the hawk dropped him right there on the green, and the ball popped out of his paws and rolled to about 18 inches from the hole!"
Mother Superior sat back in her chair, folded her arms across her chest, fixed the Sister with a baleful stare and said...
"YOU MISSED THE F*****G PUTT, DIDN’T YOU?

PERHAPS THIS SUMMER GOLF’S ON!
For the last three years we’ve unsuccessfully asked our golf section to organise a social 9 holes between cricket and golf at De Kieviten. Although some of us play golf anywhere in the world we’re not allowed to play at De Kieviten as we don’t seem to have a GVB (Dutch golf diploma). The Golf section will investigate this and find a way to allow us on their ground for one night!
Last year JW signed up for golf at De Kieviten and participated in some sort of introduction event for new members and was approached by Tineke de Wit. She seemed quite keen to organise it for us this time. Ever since then I’ve met plenty of golfers that are keen to have us on, even if it’s only for 9 holes.
Soon we hope to inform you of a date and more details about this event. The ones that replied to our call last year will be contacted directly. Others that are interested are welcome to sign up for this.
