The Bails 27 juli 2007

Hi All,

Artikel 45 - Promotie en degradatie

1. De promotieregeling (promotion) met betrekking tot de herencompetities luidt als volgt:
a. Eerste Klasse: de kampioen van de Eerste Klasse promoveert naar de Nachenius Tjeenk Competitie; (Champion gets promoted to Hoofdklasse)

c. Tweede Klasse A en B: de beide kampioenen promoveren naar de overgangsklasse; (champions 2A and 2B are promoted to Overgangsklasse A & B)

3. De degradatieregeling (relagation) met betrekking tot de herencompetities luidt als volgt:

b. Eerste Klasse: het laagst en één-na-laagst geëindigde elftal degradeert naar de Overgangsklasse; (last and second last go down)

d. Tweede Klasse: het in iedere competitie laagst en één-na-laagst geëindigde elftal degradeert naar de Derde Klasse; (last and second last go down)

To go short there is still a lot of work to be done.

Enjoy the summerbreak and see you back on Tuesday 31 July next.

Forza Kieviten!

KIEVITEN I

Unfortunately no reports from the first XI this week. Especially a pity as we thrashed Hercules on Saturday & Hermes DVS the next day. John who usually writes the first team reports is away for the summer break.

One of the visitors dropping by on Saturday was Dave Branson (Kieviten I: 1974-1986). Branny is over from Italy for a temporay project here. Having played in the Hoofdklasse for Kieviten back in the eighties he might consider a position at Kieviten too being our manager. Anyway it was nice to see him again and we thank him for becoming an OLD KIEVIT/BALL SPONSOR.

After Saturday's match the players of both teams rushed to HCC to witness Tim de Leede's farewell match. Sorry to hear Tim didn't score much runs that day. Though we thank him for representing Holland all these years and hope he will enjoy his free time with his family in the future. One of the Hercules players, former international and Dutch national XI captain, Steven Lubbers (http://content-www.cricinfo.com/ci/content/player/24920.html) was hesitating to go as such thing was never organised after he resigned from the Dutch XI. Being the good sport he is he naturally went.

Below you find the scorecards of both matches.

KIEVITEN II – MOP I

MOP 132 all out 40 overs (Zia Butt 2 -15, Paul Miller 2-21).  Kieviten 2 134-2 in 24 overs (Nasir 43*, Nilesh 31*, Moshin 30)

Kieviten 2nds won a relegation showdown against a nine man MOP by 8 wickets with 16 overs to spare.   MOP chose to bat first on another rainy, overcast morning.  They were soon under pressure through Nasir (7-3-15-1) who started with three straight maidens and Peter (8-0-25-1) who despite a wild first over got the occasional ball to bounce awkwardly striking their opener a painful blow on the elbow.

Kieviten contained the batsman with the score creeping forward at three runs per over and several interruptions for rain.  It took the introduction of spin, Zia (8-1-15-2) and Chaudry (6-1-21-1) to start working through the wickets.   A chipped catch to Moshin at square leg and then a slow motion stumping by Nilesh helped Zia to remove two of their best batsmen.  Chaudry then clean bowled their danger man and top scorer.  Secret weapon Windy (4-1-20-2) got in on the act with two wickets in one over and MOP were in trouble.

After a brief MOP revival, Kieviten brought back the “quicks” - Peter, Martin (7-1-21-1) and Nasir - who kept it tight and grabbed a wicket each with good catching by Peter (high ball at long leg), Zia (gully catch) and Windy (lob to mid wicket).  With only 9 men to bat, a heavy outfield and the strong Kieviten bowlers, MOP were under pressure for the whole 40 overs.

When Kieviten’s turn came to bat, there was a first ball scare for Moshin (dropped at 1st slip) but he finally found his Mojo after a run of low scores and swatted two big sixes in a up tempo 30 runs. Saqib “Bhavin Patel” Butt (15) supported solidly and helped build a foundation against their front line bowlers before both were out to skied catches (well caught Adnan fielding for the other side!).

With a win critical, Nasir and Nilesh closed the match off.  Nilesh (despite being dropped first ball) showed that he is more than a nudger and nurdler by thrashing two sixes in his unbeaten 31.  Nasir dabbed the ones & hit the bad balls, and (except for being bowled by a waist high no-ball full toss) never looked in any trouble.  Together they put on 74 in about 10 overs barely breaking a sweat and with excellent running between the wickets.

And so Kieviten collected another 2 points.  MOP were the weakest side we have seen this year and they were not helped by two of their best players failing to turn up for the match.   A good performance, but not exactly clinical - we need more control with the new ball and much better catching - about six went down.

Still a win is a win, and the chips and beer after the match certainly tasted all the sweeter after our 2nd victory of the season.

Man of the Match - Nasir great tight bowling early on and then closing off the match with a smooth 43 not out.

Next weekend there is no match as the league takes a holiday.  We are back in action on August 5th against league leaders Asvion.  A critical match will be VOC on Saturday 18th August.  See if you can arrange to be available for that match.  Another couple of wins and we are out of the relegation zone.

SUNANDAN RAY

Dear Jan-Willem,
Fantastic to hear from you.
I would have loved to have joined all of you on August 22 (for SGS / reunion), but unfortunately we leave Holland on August 21. Is there any chance we could work out a mini-reunion any time between August 14 and 20?
It would be great to get together with whoever is around!   Thanks for including me in the circulation of Kieviten news. Its fun to relive the past!
Cheers! + greetings from Monica.
Sunandan

Dear Sunandan and friends,
There are two ways to deal with this. Early this year we intended to have an Old Kieviten –Kieviten cricket match.
Unfortunately we haven’t received too many replies for this. So firstly I propose to use this opportunity to play this match sometime between August 14 and 20.

Second is that we have lunch or drinks together sometime at Kieviten or restaurant in Den Haag (Lof der Zotheid). Suppose Wim & Loes de Roos, Michiel & Coen Kerhoven, Roland Wigman, George Bontenbal, Alun & Patricia Jones should reply to this call. David Callin is still in UK and Pieter Bas Douwes Dekker I believe lives in the east of Holland. Derkje Schut already replied that she’s busy moving her son from Friesland to Enschede.

Anyone interested is naturally invited. Frans van Egmond I suppose you Sunandan too as you signed up shortly before he left the club.

It all depends on you!

Ps: Perhaps you didn’t know but former 4th team member and dear friend Robert Haks can’t be with us anymore.. He passed away many years ago.

ENGLANDINDIA TEST / Day 5 at Lord’s
<Cricinfo>
4.09 pm Steve Bucknor and Simon Taufel just inspected conditions, and they're decided its good for play. The covers are starting to come off.

4.05 pm We're coming close to half an hour since the players went off for bad light. The drizzle has got heavier now. The covers are still on. The light however, is brighter.

3.40 pm The rain has finally arrived. Well it's actually a drizzle but the groundstaff have covered the square. The rain isn't a serious problem but the light is the concern. It should improve soon though ...

3.33 pm Tea is scheduled in seven minutes, but it can be pushed back a maximum of 30 minutes. Bucknor and Taufel inspect the light again. It's not good enough, according to them, and they offer it to the batsmen. Not surprisingly, it's snapped up in a second and off march Dhoni and Sreesanth. England follow them reluctantly. A couple smiles on the Indian balcony, namely Tendulkar, as the players head inside. So tea is taken five minutes earlier on day five. Umbrellas go up in the stands and the covers are guided on.

England need one wicket.
Then on <Kieviten Yahoo Group>
Avi Singh: ha...we survive for another day - for the record, the highest run chase at Lord's previously has been 342, so india making it to 282, on a swinging wicket - pretty impressive if you ask me.
Anmol Sud: the rain gods saved us!! watching the game with Sully gave me immense pleasure as he was very optimistic that: quote"I think tonight the goat is going to be fried and eaten !!!" unquotebut anyways i thought india should have won the match
Ben Wharton Survived? Saved by the weather I reckon. Good game though. Hope we have some more, but with results.
Sully You wanna try being here in Delhi ! Especially with the white David Beckham crowing about how he personally spoke to God to arrange the rain ! Watch the news tonight. 'Local Delhi Playboy Anmol Sud found strangled' !!!!

Federal Court Ruling from the Melbourne Age, Australia (AP)
A seven year old boy was at the centre of a courtroom drama yesterday when he challenged a court ruling over who should have custody of him.
The boy has a history of being beaten by his parents and the judge initially awarded custody to his aunt, in keeping with the child custody law and regulations requiring that family unity be maintained to the degree possible.
The boy surprised the court when he proclaimed that his aunt beat him more than his parents and he adamantly refused to live with her.  When the judge suggested that he live with his grandparents, the boy cried out that they also beat him.
After considering the remainder of the immediate family and learning that domestic violence was apparently a way of life among them, the judge took the unprecedented step of allowing the boy to propose who should have custody of him.
After two recesses to check legal references and confer with child welfare officials, the judge granted temporary custody to the English Cricket Team, whom the boy firmly believes are "not capable of beating anyone."
