The Bails 25 mei 2007

Hi all,

Another good win for the firsts yesterday saw us gain 2 more vital points in the Eerste Klasse. The bowlers put in another excellent shift and rolled Jinnah over for 126 a.o. Wickets once again shared around - we really do have good bowling options and everyone is bowling well. Our fielding was not quite up to the mark although special mention goes to Ben who took a great catch at gully, and Malik who had three catches and a run out. In reply we had an early wobble at 44 - 3, but they missed a couple of chances, and Hamed (50) and Mo (34) batted positively to take us to the brink of victory. It was groundhog day as the same two batsman (Ben and Nissar) as last week saw us home to clinch another four wicket victory - predictably a Nissar 6 finished the job.

The seconds had to field the first hour with 9 men and consequently conceded a monster score of over 322-5. This was always going to be difficult to chase down but credit to Jan Willem who just missed out on a personal century (97) and was the foundation on which the respectable reply of 240-9 was based. There were also good contributions from debutants Mohsin (37) and Chaudhry (21). We expect the 2nd team to get stronger and stronger as the season progresses as more players become available.

The 1st team make their 20/20 debut on Friday evening at HCC. It should be a good occasion for anyone keen to watch. The game starts at 6:30 PM.

Next Sunday (27th) our 1sts travel to Hermes DVS. On the Monday (28th) our 1st team will play HCC 2nds. Even though it's a home game we will play the fixture at HCC due to problems with field availability. The 2nds will also have a game on the Monday against Jinnah 2nds away.

Last week we witnessed the start of the Nachenius Tjeenk Twenty20 Cricket Cup. Today week we set off in our first match against HCC. We hope all will come down and cheer for a Kieviten win. FYI last week HCC lost to HBS away. Every club is allowed one outsider. Not sure if it’s true but we’ve heard that VRA has contracted Darrin Lehman (travelling from the
UK every week) as their outsider. We’ve managed to bring in Wijnand van Huut from Olympia. We welcome Wijnand to De Kieviten and wish him all the luck in the next couple of weeks.

In this Friday night league we only play one match at De Kieviten on June 7th. Enclosed we send you posters that you can print out and put up in bars, cantinas, announcement boards at work, or anywhere you can. We want to see as many people as possible. Spread the word!

Please send a mail to kievitencricket@hotmail.com with your availability for these games. This will probably be the busiest cricket weekend of the season so please go that extra yard to make yourself available.

Training will be as normal this week Tuesday and Thursday from 19:00

Forza Kieviten!!

John & JW

KIEVITEN I – DOSTI I (2-0)

The first team had a great win at the weekend against title candidates Dosti. We bowled first and within 36 overs had them all back in the hutch for 153 a.o. Wickets shared around and well backed up by sharp fielding (special mention H.Altaf for 2 'spectacular' pieces of fielding which resulted in a run out and a catch). In reply we got off to a great start (60 - 0 off 14) but had a mid innings wobble against their more than useful spin attack. In the end we took 49.5 overs to finish the job for the loss of six wickets. Nissar (26*) and Ben (8*) saw us home with an unbeaten 35 run partnership.

VOC III – KIEVITEN II

VOC 322-5 50 overs  (Raja 2-41, Peter 2-55, Mohsin 1-48).

Kieviten 240-9 in 50 overs (Jan Willem 97, Mohsin 37, Chaudhry 21)

Kieviten 2nd XI lost by 82 runs in their first match in the 2A.

A new look Kieviten team started their 2007 campaign at VOC. Kieviten chose to field on a sunny morning hoping that late call-up Zia and late wake-up Karn would be able to arrive quickly.

The early overs saw VOC playing the ball around and scoring easily with an early wicket for Moshin taking a catch off his own bowling.  Only after the drinks break and the addition of two fielders did Peter break through with a couple of wickets to leave VOC at 120-3.

Raja picked up two wickets with some accurate offspin and Kieviten sensed a chance but, despite good bowling from Chaudry, Karn, and Moshin, Kieviten dropped too many catches and let the VOC batsmen get away. Eventually 50 overs of hard work in the field left us with 322 to chase with their 17 year old ending up 98 not out.

When Kieviten’s turn came to bat, we found run scoring more difficult against some young line and length medium pacers. Soon we were 50-3 with Raja, new boy Hardev and Nasir managing a few good strokes but then getting out.

With the rain falling, Virang was “slipped out” leading to a short pause while the pitch was covered, rule books were consulted and a long discussion took place on if we could continue playing.

Eventually, an amicable settlement was reached, the rain let off, and Jan-Willem & Moshin started to make an impact against the VOC spinners.  Moshin smacked three sixes in his 37 and Jan-Willem played straight and safe.  When Moshin got too ambitious and Peter & Karn fell quickly it was left to Chaudry to block and deflect his way to 21 and share a partnership of 94 with Jan-Willem.

Jan-Willem took the lead in the partnership hitting the short ball well and taking singles where necessary. He fell for 97 in the last over, looking for one last boundary to make his hundred.  Together they took Kieviten to a more than respectable 240-9 and kept VOC out in the rain & cold for the full allotment of 50 overs.

In the end, we made a competent start to the season but with better catching and sharper ground fielding we may have been chasing 260 and the game may have been rather different. This team has potential – watch this space.

Man of the Match – Jan Willem – 97 runs and stand in wicket keeper for 50 overs with only 5 byes.

INTRODUCTION NEW PLAYERS:

M. Yousouf “Jozef” Chaudhry (2.10.1952): I believe has been a member of practically every club in Zuid Holland. Apart from his membership with CCG (veteran cricket) he’s signing up with Kieviten for the second time to play in a Sunday league. Many will know him from his former sportshop on the Tompsonlaan and later Laan van Meerdervoort in Den Haag. In his first match he scored a patient 21 runs and bowled (right arm) a nice slow ball. Adapting to the old club’s tradition well, as he’s keen to get to the bar first to sink a couple of Heinekens and discuss worldly issues.

Mohsin Khan (1.5.1976): was introduced to us a couple of years ago by Danish, Ali and Shariq Qureshi. He was never properly signed up with a club before but is now playing with us. This right arm medium bowler and unorthodox but surely hard hitting batsman is a credit to the team. This middle order batsman will definitely see a couple of fifty’s or even a century from this one.

M.Q. Raja (28.9.1968): is totally new to us. Two years ago he resigned from playing cricket as his former club Asian Shaheen was expelled by the KNCB as they were in Dire Straits.

Inspired by his mates Mohsin and Nazir he’s keen to play again and signed up with us. He’s a right arm spinner and is hard to play. As a batsman he needs to get his eye back in and will probably score some good runs for the club.

Lads we all welcome you to De Kieviten and hope you’ll enjoy your time with us!

NACHENIUS TJEENK TWENTY20 CUP

As JW mentioned we get underway with our 20-20 comp at HCC on Friday night. This is probably the best ground in Den Haag and I hear they are putting on a BBQ so should be plenty to occupy the spectator.

A summary of the competition rules is at the bottom of this message (in Dutch) but the points of interest seem to be -

1.We have only 75 minutes to send down 20 overs otherwise we get penalty runs against us (6 per over not completed).

2.Batsmen have only 90 seconds to get to the crease at the fall of the wicket - Could see a return to the O'Sullivan captaincy style of having seven players padded up and deciding who to send in when the wicket falls.

3. A No Ball results in a free hit (in other words you can't be out off the rebowled ball). Lets hope our bowlers don't overstep like they do in the indoor nets otherwise we may concede 400!

4. Fielding restrictions only last 6 overs.

o        Geen drinkpauzes

-                       Tijdshandhaving is strikt

-                       Vertraagde of onderbroken innings

-                       No Ball

-                       Finals Day

o        Voor Finals Day gelden speciale regels;

§         Zwarte sightscreens

§         Witte bal

§         Toepassing D/L

§         Functioneren van een Technische commissie
