The Bails 24 augustus 2007
A good weekend of cricket saw Kieviten claim a disappointing 2 out of a possible 6 points. The 2 points were claimed by the 2nds on Saturday against their relegation rivals VOC, thanks largely to an amazing 81 not out from Adnan batting at number 9. We lost both games on Sunday, but the margins were close - the first team lost by 1 wicket and the 2nds lost at HCC off the last ball of the match.
This weekend sees the completion of the league program for both 1st and 2nd team.
On Saturday the 1sts travel to Sparta who were crowned as Champions last week with a win at Rood & Wit last week. A win for us would guarantee 2nd place which would be a tremendous achievement. So all to play for.
On Sunday the 2nds will visit Punjab (the one in Rotterdam, not Eastern Pakistan/North West India) and a win would mean they still have a decent chance of avoiding relegation - again all to play for.

KIEVITEN II
Great cricket over the weekend by the 2nds:
VOC3 243-7 50 overs (Zia Butt 4 -42). Kieviten 2 246-7 in 48 overs (Adnan 81*, Jan-Willem 46*, Mark 20, Guidy 20)
Kieviten beat VOC by 3 wickets with 9 balls to spare keeping alive chances of avoiding relegation.
VOC chose to bat and made slow and steady progress against some tight bowling from Nimesh (10-1-33-1) and Peter (10-1-27-0). They were happy to take the singles and not take too many risks especially since they only had nine batsmen.
The Saturday bowling attack - including new stars Mark Yates (8-1-51-1), Jan-Willem (3-0-19-0), Karn (10-0-64-1) - took over with some good stuff picking up a couple of wickets between them (catches by Karn and Adnan) to keep VOC on the back foot. Zia (9-0-42-4), made the difference taking some big wickets as VOC tried to accelerate with Marco at slip taking one exceptional catch off his boot.
Still VOC kept accumulating and we couldn’t get their opener out who finally ended up with 134 not out. VOC made 243 but Kieviten never let them get away and the final target was certainly in reach. Guidy (20) and Mark (20) started positively with Guidy hitting a nice straight six and the score rattling along to 60-0 but all of a sudden the wheels fell off - Mark chipped a catch, Guidy was bowled, Nimesh got run out without facing a ball, Karn had one slog too many and we were 66-4. Jan-Willem (46*) and Zia (13) rebuilt the innings but the run rate was getting higher.
When Peter (4) guided a ball to slip and Robin (5) got out, Kieviten were 127-7 with 15 overs left. With only about half the runs scored we had a mountain to climb. But in walked Adnan…and 13 overs later walked off the field to a standing ovation - 81 not out with 10 fours and a six. He was particularly brutal on anything legside and, helped by Jan-Willem who pushed the singles, and poor catching by VOC, his explosive batting turned the match. VOC were thinking they had a win in the bag but a 119 run partnership changed things round.
Great game of cricket and Kieviten certainly enjoyed the win.
Man of the Match - Who else but Adnan - high quality hitting and winning the match for us. Adnan has taken over from Karn as Champion Slogger!
-
Kieviten 2 255-9 in 50 overs (Moshin 50, Peter 41*, JW 27) HCC3 260-6 50 overs (Chaudry 2-38).
Kieviten lost against HCC 3rds in a thriller with the wining runs scored off the last ball.
Kieviten won the toss and asked HCC to field on the plastic outfield. Raja (10) & Mark (16) started brightly against some of the best fast bowling seen this season. Both batsmen hit the ball cleanly forcing the field back but Raja top edged a hook & soon Kieviten were in a familiar situation as Mark sliced to third man and Nasir (12) was run out leaving us 52-3 after 16 overs.
Jan Willem (27) steadied the ship with classic forward defensive shots and some strong leg side boundaries and Windy (10) played his shots against the spinners. Windy hit in the air once too often to be caught and, after a small partnership Martin (9 - smacked a ball to long on) and Jan Willem (played a wide ball on to the stumps), Kieviten were 112-6 off 33 overs and needed to build again. Moshin was promoted up the order to push the accelerator and duly delivered. After a couple of balls to get his eye in, Moshin cut loose whacking two 6s and four 4’s and in a few overs had transformed the innings. He put on 77 with Peter before being tricked by a slower ball just after reaching 50.
And it didn’t stop there - Saturday’s hero Adnan (11) crashed his first two balls for four and then Karn (18) added a series of cultured slogs while all the time Peter pushed ones & two.
In the last over Peter (41*) smacked their opening bowler for six and last man Chaudry also clattered him down the ground - Kieviten had made it to 255. We knew it wasn’t a great score on the fast astro-turf outfield, but still we were in the game. A change of tactics saw Raja (10-1-43-0) and Moshin (10-1-40-1) open the bowling. They keep it tight and Nasir beat the bat on numerous occasions as well as taking a key wicket as he bowled his 10 straight through.
Martin (6-0-30-1) bowled nicely and at first drinks HCC were 53-1 of 16 overs. Windy (3-0-19-0) and Chaudry (7-1-38-2) provided mystery spin with Chaudry bowling particularly well (except for a couple of high scoring overs) - frustrating the batsmen and taking key wickets. Peter (10-0-61-1) only bowling after 24 overs got their key batsmen out thanks to a great catch from Martin. It was headed for a close finish and when a Karn (4-0-24-1) slower ball tricked a batsman into edging behind Kieviten were on top. 97 runs were needed off 14 overs.
Raja, suffering with a sore finger after missing an exocet catch, and Peter, bowling some nasty bouncers, both bowled well - beating the bat and staying on top for five balls of an over only for a loose one to scoot to the boundary over the quick outfield. The rowdy crowd was silenced by the tension as it came down to three needed of the last over. Martin bowled three dots, a single and wicket (good pressure catch from Raja) leaving HCC two to win off the last ball….and their batsmen hit it for six.
We were sad to lose (and increase the chance of being relegated) but it was a great game in which everyone in the team participated - great bowling from Raja, Nasir, and particularly Chaudhry with two wickets, high quality slogging from Moshin, Karn and Adenaan, solid batting from JW and Peter and hard work in the field from everyone.
Perhaps we can beat Punjab (if we can find a day to play) and stay in 2A - we seem to be finally learning how to play together as a team.
Man of the Match - Moshin - high quality hitting just when the team needed it.
TRAINING
The final two training sessions of the season will be tonight (Tuesday) and Thursday. An extra bonus is that tonight we will be showing the 1st Eng v India One Day International on SKY in the clubhouse. Its a day/night game.
CURRY NIGHT
On Saturday evening we will be going for a curry after the game. We hope the 2nd team players can join in too, despite their having to play on Sunday - any bad jokes about getting the runs will result in a fine.

It certainly makes you proud to be a Kievit! I would love to take the field with this on my shirt!!
(After pressing the link you might need to hit the <F5> button a couple of times till you see the blue yello logo of TCC).
But seriously, this year we proved to be resourcefull in finding ball sponsors, team sponsors & Old Kievits to raise the neccessary funds to keep up with our ambitions. Apart from the effort we put in, it takes plenty of money to keep this show running. We have many plans and serious intentions to bring this club to a higher level.
We thanks this year's ball sponsors and Old Kievit's:

For next year we keep our fingers crossed and hope you will support us again.
Many thanks and appreciation goes to Brian Jenkins (Aldeco) , Arshad Zia Butt and Angelina Abrahams (The Difference) for their generousity. Realistically we need to look for more sponsors to spread the load. Therefore we call upon all to look around for companies or friends of our club that don't mind chipping in too.
The season hasn't ended yet and already we're discussing next year's plans regarding:
- Sully's proposed tour to South East Asia,
- a way to increase the membership,
- the section's 60th anniversary,
- SGS 2008,
- new outdoor nets,
- new shirts and caps,
Ending up high the Eerste klasse table has unleashed an urge to see if we can make it to Hoofdklasse. As we're ordering new kitt before the start of next year this could be interesting for potential new shirt sponsors to get involved.
We don't know whether Chris Seisun will be interested in coming back next year. Chris has been away from home for a long time and will be spending winter in South Africa again.
We take this opportunity now to thank everybody for their interest and help and after this weekend look forward to season 60 of Kieviten's cricket section.
KIEVITEN XI versus SGS XI
Last wednesday we played our annual match against SGS. I don't recall losing to SGS ever but the turtle managed to beat the rabbit this time. Most of our wickets were taken by SGS slow bowlers. Kieviten scored 123 only. It took SGS about 30 overs to pass the total by 10 wickets. (10 catches were dropped)
Man of the match was Eric de Haard (VRA) who scored a patient 50.
After the match George Moon informed the group that he and his wife Pat are leaving Holland to live in France in 2009. So next year will probably be his last match for SGS against Kieviten.
Afterwards we went to Lof der Zotheid Den Haag:
Next year the cricket section celebrates it's 60th anniversary. Also it being George's last year here we'd like to get some ideas from you on how we can expand activities a bit more. Anyone having ideas please express them to the group or to me.
Next week will be the last bails of this year.
FORZA KIEVITEN!
