The Bails 22 juni

Hi All,

Last night the atmosphere at Kieviten’s AGM was a bit tense. Nevertheless we got through the agenda and thank all of those who attended the meeting.

The space behind the committee table was too tight to store all 9 committee members with the result of Martijn Sperling and I sitting second line behind De Kieviten chairman Rob Bergen.

A couple of questions were asked about the financial status of De Kieviten as both Tennis and Hockey intend to upgrade their facilities spending more money on all-weather tennis courts and a potential third Astro hockey pitch. Raise of the annual fees were approved by the membership and the company regretted the fact that Kieviten missed out on a Heineken bonus simply for not drinking enough beer last year. Carien Roodenburg and Brigit Römer resigned as committee member and financial help and were awarded the Silver Kievit.

As to be expected the main committee was requested by one of the members (golf?) to investigate field availability more thorough. The man objected to Martijn Sperling’s earlier comment sharing good news to the hockey section telling them that he’d finally fixed their two grass hockey pitches that had been destroyed by larves and crows before. The man clearly pointed out to Martijn that De Kieviten was an Omni club and it was totally out of order for Martijn to disturb arrangements made by the Ground Availability Committee / Terrein Beschikbaarheid Commissie. In this case the man meant hockey’s gain was golf’s loss!

Then he continued complaining about the cricket section playing 13 Sunday cricket matches in summer with the result that golfers had no access to holes no 4, 5 & 6 on a sunday. He requested the main committee to investigate a way to sort this out and give golf priority over cricket simply by having more members. Having my speech ready and waiting for the chairman to pass this one on to me Martijn got agitated and fired back at him that the man should have been informed better.

Firstly as head of the Ground Availability Committee Martijn was fully aware of what the OMNI-club is all about.

Secondly he explained that the hockey section had no access to the destroyed field for three years and had to resolve to hiring fields elsewhere. In the meantime the golf section had total access to their course during the winter without having to pay extra or compensate the hockey section. Plus the fact that nets are to be installed next to the Astro Hockey pitches soon the golfers shouldn’t worry at all as this will create more field availability to them.

And finally Martijn pointed out that the cricket section had every right to play there. Having less availability over the fields was one of the main reasons that golf membership fees had been so low as both cricket and hockey has always been played at De Kieviten. Golf course availability was based around the program of both hockey and cricket.

With Martijn slapping the man verbally I patiently waited for an opportunity to say something on behalf of the cricket section too. Then Martijn was interrupted by Rob Bergen (former golf section chairman) explaining the man, that perhaps unfortunately, cricket was indeed entitled to play Sunday matches and train every Thursday night and that numbers weren’t the issue here. Overlooking the present argument on Tuesday night training he supported Martijn’s offence.

In the meantime I find myself looking up visualising my list of issues that I wanted to share with the membership defending our section. I discovered that there was one issue that hadn’t been mentioned yet. Almost pushing me back in my seat vice-chairman Dymphna Vree stepped in and fearsomely attacked the man once more telling him that she was fed up with this sort of attitude and that it’s time for all at De Kieviten to start thinking as a club and repeated the word OMNI so many times that I lost count.

Having me left with only “Yeah” to say or repeat parts of the earlier monologues I decided to say nothing. Shortly after the meeting finished. We all rushed to the bar and socialised till midnight. I didn’t go to Kieviten in vain. Personally I don’t like meetings that much. I consider myself more of a lobbyist and managed to do good business while drinking beer in an attempt to safe next years Heineken bonus.

Last week we’ve played our last Twenty20 match against VCC. Apparently VCC and Kieviten ended at the bottom of our league. We surely had fun and it was a great experience.

Next Saturday Kieviten I entertains HCC2 which was rained off earlier in the season. Sunday we are again at home to Hercules. The 2nd team are also at home on Sunday to Punjab 2.

FORZA KIEVITEN!

KIEVITEN I + II (last Sunday)

There were defeats this weekend for both the 1st and 2nd team. Some positives came out of both games but unfortunately no points!!

The firsts won the toss and asked
Sparta to bat. Prematch interest centred on the Sparta's big hitting Kiwi coach Luc Vivian who has scored 600 runs already this season. A good performance from the bowlers backed up by the fielders catching everything they got a hand too saw us restrict their powerful line up to 180 all out. Vivian was restricted to just 9 and holed out to deep square leg after being nicely set up by Christian. Good returns from Christian (1 for 20 off 10), Malik (4 for 43 off 9.3), Hamed (3 for 36 off 10), Fazil (1 for 16 off 8) and Bhavin (1 for 32 off 8).

In reply Nissar once again got us off to a flyer (a quick 39) but once he went we again lost wickets quicky together to plung from 39 for 1 to 59 for 5. Malik (23) and John (28) were repairing the damage but when Malik was out with the score on 88 there was still a lot to do. Unfortunately we got no more partnerships and were all out for 125 in the 39th over.

The 2nds game was moved from our 2nd pitch which was soaking wet to HCC's 3rd ground at
Aloyisus College in Den Haag. In a 40 over contest, we set a reasonable target of 173 for 6 off our 40 overs. Raja made a good 62 opening the innings, and JW (35 not out) and Karn (23 not out) finished off the innings with a good partnership. Handy contributions also came from Zias son (14), Mark (10) and Peter (10).

HCC knocked off the runs with 3 overs and 3 wickets to spare despite excellent bowling from Arshad Ali (1 for 30 off 8), Moshin (1 for 28 off 8), Raja (2 for 22 off 7), Peter (1 for 33 off 7) and Chaudry (1 for 34 off 6). Again our lack of players made the difference with an infiller (found by JW at the last minute) attracting and dropping a few high balls in the field which could have turned the result the other way. It's been a tough old season for the 2nds so far but the signs are there that with just 2 more players regularly available we would be very competitive in that league.
