The Bails 20 juli 2007

Hi All,

The result of last weekend wasn't the one we'd hoped for. The first team match was abandoned due to rain again and the seconds suffered two more losses.

Having not heard or seen one of Kieviten’s favourite bondsumpires, Wilbert Stembord, this year I decided to call him yesterday at his home in Dussen. Perhaps not a member Wilbert has always shown great interest and sympathy for our club. With true cricket addict Frank van der Weijden he umpired SGS-2006 and Wilbert even considered to come along on tour with us.

Apparently Wilbert has suffered a heavy car crash last October. Whilst driving on the main road he got hit in the back by a car speeding a 160 km that was out of control. After he landed on the backseat Wilbert tried to get back behind the wheel and managed to stop his car on the side of the road. Suffering from physical problems Wilbert is still having physiotherapy 10 months later. Through this injury he won’t be able to umpire at least this year. Not sure if he will after.

We’re shocked to learn of this news and wish Wilbert all the best, a swift recovery and look forward to seeing him again.

Perhaps not umpiring we surely invite him for this years SGS to come down and watch or even join us to Lof der Zotheid afterwards.

Forza Wilbert

A very short article as we were victims of the wonderful Dutch summer...

Kieviten Fall Victim Of Weather

Despite confident weather forecasts that summer was on the way Kieviten fell victim of the weather for the third time this season. Their game at Jinnah in Abcoude was only 10 overs old when a very heavy thunderstorm sent the players running for cover with Kieviten having scored 30 for 1. Some 2 hours later the rain finally relented and the umpires were able to make a decision as to whether or not the ground was playable. Unfortunately the covers on the pitch had not stood up to the test and the officials decided it would be too dangerous to continue the game.

Kieviten now have 7 games left to play in 5 weekends, and with another poor forecast for next weekend the situation could become even more difficult.

Kievitens second team were able to complete two matches this weekend - which coincidentally were both against Jinnah. On Saturday they lost the away game after being unable to defend a total of 177. All the top 6 batsmen scored 20 but none of them were able to go on to post a big score.

In the return game on Sunday, Jinnah batted first and managed to score 216 all out in a match reduced to 45 overs due to the weather. In reply the Kieviten batting suffered a total collapse and found themselves facing humiliation at 58 for 8. Mitul Luhar (58) and skipper Peter Arnfield (31 not out) were able to restore some pride, and a quickfire 18 from last man Karn Singh hinted at a shock win. It wasn't to be though and in the end Kieviten were all some 43 runs short of the line.

JINNAH II – KIEVITEN II

Gents,

No joy for the 2nds at the weekend:

Saturday:

Kieviten 177 all out in 46 Overs (Nilesh 24, JW 23, Peter 22, Bhavin 22, Mitul 21).

Jinnah 2 178-6 28 overs  (Peter 3-43, Steve 1-39, Mitul  1-38, Nilesh 1-18).

After Peter, John and JW had scoured the bars of Den Haag looking for 2nd XI recruits on Friday, we fielded a full eleven players including three Indians, two English, two Americans, two Dutch, a Sri Lankan and a Scottish Italian.

Jinnah chose to field but were soon chasing the leather as Bhavin played some powerful drives including a nice six over long off and Nilesh played the ball into the gaps. Runs were coming at 5 an over but it didn’t last, as Bhavin (21) was unlucky to be given leg before and then Nilesh (24) chipped a ball for a good catch at square leg.

JW and Mitul (21) kept the pressure on with Mitul being aggressive but only to be trapped in front by one that kept low when he was just getting going.  With Steve Mansell unable to resist a slow loopy one and being caught, the United Nations of Kieviten needed to rebuild.  Peter and JW did exactly that by pushing the singles from some reasonable spinners and running hard.  They took the score to around 150 in the 40th over before Peter (22) perished trying to lift the pace and JW (23) followed shortly after caught behind.

Alan Sud, who had been wondering why Peter & JW had been blocking the spinners up to the 40th and “last” over, strode manfully to the crease and immediately starting crashed the ball through the covers.  Karn (8) and Alan (7) ably supported by, Travis Yates, Marco Steijn and the unbeaten Robert de Jonge van Ellemeet, pushed the score up to a defendable 177 and nearly managed to use up their overs.

After cheese sandwiches, milk and a high energy warm up from Steve, a new look fast bowling attack steamed in. Steve (1-39) got a good caught & bowled in his first over and Bhavin bowled straight. One of their openers liked to hit the ball and unfortunately he crashed several boundaries in the first few overs.

A double bowling change brought LBWs for Peter and Mitul and then Peter got another through a stunning slip catch by Marco - first parrying the ball and then catching the rebound.

Peter picked up a third wicket and Kieviten sensed a chance, however we couldn’t get their big hitting batsmen out and, despite JW’s advice of bowling less full tosses & half trackers, the fours and sixes continued. It was only after the introduction of Nilesh’s mystery spin that their big man was out clean bowled but he had scored 90 runs and damage had been done.  With only twenty or so runs needed, Jinnah got to their target without further alarm.

Overall, it was an enjoyable match with a contribution from everyone and “more than fair” umpiring from both sides. It would have been nice to win, and there was always the return leg in Wassenaar on Sunday.

Man of the Match - Nilesh - batted well (and just top scored), kept wicket and then bowled out their key batsman.

KIEVITEN II – JINNAH II

Sunday:

Jinnah 216 all out 45 overs (Raja 3 -19, Chaudry 3-22, Peter 2-43, Vidush Pujara, 2-48).

Kieviten 2 173 all out 39 overs (Mitul 58, Peter 31*, Karn 18)

Despite fielding a strong side, Kieviten 2nd XI lost again on Sunday. A delayed start due to heavy rain limited the match to 45 overs. However, the way their openers played, it was more like 20/20 - it was 63-0 with only eight overs gone even though both Nasir and Peter troubled the batsmen with the short ball.

Offspinners, Raja and Vidush (Pujara) were brought into the attack with immediate results with 3 excellent wickets for Raja (including a good catch from Chaudry) and a sharp caught and bowled for Vidush.  Suddenly, Jinnah were 67-4 off 15 overs and Raja (9-1-19-3) and Vidush (9-2-48-2) were controlling the game.

Jinnah fought their way back and it was time for a change. Nilesh and Chaudry came on and immediately applied the pressure with four straight maidens and the pressure translated into wickets for Chaudry (6-2-22-3) with some good boundary catching by Vidush.

Still Jinnah fought but finally we dismissed them for 216 in the last over with Peter grabbing a couple of late wickets (7-0-43-2) but missing an easy run out despite loud shouting from the team.  In general, a good performance in the field, were everyone (but particularly the spinners) bowled well and the ground fielding (particularly Mitul, Vidush and Karn) looked really good.

We thought 216 was a low score on the fast scoring Lapwing oval.  However, after 19 overs and Kieviten being 58-8, we were less optimistic.  The high order batting turned out to be a disappointment - Jinnah bowled fast & straight and wickets fell.  Nilesh thin edged to the keeper, JW was runout after a mix up, Vidush bowled playing across one that kept low, a fired up Raja was cleaned up after scoring just 1; and Nasir & Windy quickly got out.    A dressing room panic for pads would have left us “timed out” but Jinnah waited patiently and then quickly picked up Chaudry and Moshin (nice six though).

The innings became a quest for respectability, lead by Mitul and supported by Peter. Jinnah first found the partnership irritating, then found it worrying and soon were wondering who would bowl the next over.  An unlikely win seemed a possibility.   Mitul (58 with 6x4 and 1x6), started his scoring with a six and played aggressively and sensibly.  Peter (31*) pushed singles and cracked some good off drives and together took the score into the 130s with a run rate required around six an over.

Mitul got out to a catch in the deep, but the game wasn’t quite over as he was replaced by “why block when you can swing” Karn, who immediately connected and raced to 18 in a last wicket stand of 36 with Peter.  It couldn’t last and Kieviten were finally out for 173 losing by 43 runs with six overs remaining.

Overall, we let ourselves down. A disappointing day for a team with lots of talent, but still many good performances:  Mitul and Peter getting their highest scores of the season; Chaudry getting his best Kieviten bowling and a catch as well.  But… we really need to win some more matches.

Man of the Match - Mitul 58 runs and some great fielding and catching.

Red.: After his sublime bowling spell in the first inning of last Sunday match against Jinnah 2 second team player Mazhar Raja seriously misbehaved shortly before the second inning got started. There was no reasonable cause for his behaviour. Severely disrespecting his captain and the rest of his team Raja is now suspended for at least one week. The matter and his membership of Kieviten in the future is further to be discussed next week.

OLD KIEVITS

REMEMBER ME: SUNANDAN RAY (4th XI player and captain 1984 – 1987)

Hi Jan Willem,

Its unbelievable that it is now twenty years ago that we were having such fun with the Kieviten Fourth cricket team ("May the fourth be with you!!!").

How are you? When you get time drop me a line and tell me all about yourself and what you are doing these days. How are Derkje and Paul?

Greetings from Monica too!

Who from the old Fourth team do you still have contact with? If you can let me know what each of the following are doing:

George Bontenbal

Coen Kerkhoven

Michiel Kerkhoven

Roland Wigman

I got your address from David Callin with whom I have some contact. Besides that, we do exchange Christmas cards with Alun Jones (and Patricia). We've had some contact with Wim and Loes de Roos over the years, too.

Twenty years is a long time ago but all of you are still vividly in my memory. Monica and I live in Lloyd Harbor, in Long Island (New York) about 60 kms from New York City. Our son Sumantro is now 19 and has just completed First Year of University in Florida. I guess you were his age when we played together for the Fourth!! Our daughter, Emma, is 10.

I really hope you will have time to update me on all the news. We will be in Holland in August and would love to see you.

Best regards,

Sunandan
