SGS MATCH AND DINNER – 22nd AUGUST
Hi All,
Just 5 weeks ago De Kieviten Cricket Club were nervously looking over their shoulders at the relegation places of the Eerste Klasse league having won only 4 of their first 10 games. Since then they have won 6 consecutive games and now find themselves in 2nd place putting pressure on league leaders Sparta. By the way the last fixture of this years Eerste Klasse is away against Sparta on 25th August.
Kieviten’s 2nd team managed to post a decent total of 232 all out against WCR with Nasir Alim scoring a fine 70 well supported by Mark Yates (28) and skipper Peter Arnfield (30). In reply its fair to say the 2nds didn't have their best day and failed to take a single wicket as WCR got home by 10 wickets. This week another double weekend against VOC (also bottom of the table) and HCC.
After a burglary 10 months ago we finally managed to get SKY back at Kieviten. Again we watch cricket at Kieviten during lunch and after matches and training.
Next Wednesday August 22nd we play our annual match against SGS. Further details are found below. Again we hope many will come down to watch, play or come along for diner. (Please call JW: +31-654775267.)
Last couple of weeks boys!
Forza KievitenJWKIEVITEN I
Last Sunday Kieviten demolished the leagues early pace setters Rood & Wit of Haarlem who back in June had looked near certainties for the title. Unfortunately for them their coach Nathan Mcullum had to miss five games as he was picked to represent the New Zealand A side. Mcullum’s is now back in Holland but his return has not seen a return to their early season form and Kieviten took full advantage.
After winning the toss, Kieviten chose to bat first and Nissar Ali and Hamed Altaf got them off to a perfect start with an opening partnership of 79. When Nissar fell for a fluent 56 - his first half century at this level, Altaf batted on to score a chanceless 51 which provided the backbone around which the Kieviten innings was built. He played some classical shots off his legs and down the ground and shared further good partnerships of 39 with Malik Hussain and 70 from Chris Seisun - who returned to form with a quick 52 of his own. A final partnership of 44 from John Colbran (28) and Bhavin Patel (12*) saw Kieviten reach a more than useful total of 245 for 6.
In reply it was the Malik Hussain show as the Kieviten skipper took the new ball and wreaked havoc amongst the Rood & Wit batsmen. Incredibly he took the first 9 wickets of the R & W innings in a 10 over spell and was well supported by a great team performance in the field. The prize wicket was that of Mcullum’s who was bowled third ball for 4. When Hussain took his 9th wicket he still had 10 deliveries to go for the clean sweep, and the bowlers at the other end had the unusual experience of trying not to take wickets. The number 11, more by luck than judgement, somehow managed to keep him out. The game was all over as a contest though as the Haarlemers were by now reduced to 62 for 9. Chris Seisun finally bowled the number 11, and Kieviten had won by the overwhelming margin of 180 runs.

KIEVITEN II
Kieviten 2 232 all out 48 overs (Nasir 72, Peter 30, Stinchy 28, Mark 24) WCR 1 234-0 27 overs
Kieviten 2nds lost heavily to WCR and are now looking odds on for relegation to the 3A.
The day started well with bright sunshine, Peter winning to toss, and then Mark (24) playing some crisp shots (including three fours in one over) to have Kieviten up and running at five an over.
Raja departed early on, but Jan-Willem (11) and Mark kept the score moving along despite some fast and hostile bowling. A couple of quick wickets brought Nasir and Stinchy (making his 2007 debut) to build a solid partnership. Both of them nudged and deflected without taking too many risks and soon built up a solid 50 partnership.
Stinchy (28) got a nick behind followed by a flurry of wickets with Martin and Moshin soon joining him back in the pavilion. Kieviten were six down with plenty of overs left and Peter and Nasir set about rebuilding. Together they put on another half-century partnership. Nasir continued deflecting, Peter blocked singles and both hit occasional fours.
When a tired Nasir finally chipped a leading edge to cover for a season best score of 72, Peter (30) continued to accumulate helped by Mark “Simon Mansell” Sugden, Adnan (nice four but best to ground your bat when running tight singles) and Josef Chaudry, before he was run out with a direct throw in the penultimate over.
Overall, a defendable score with some good late order batting to use up most of the overs. There were also plenty of over throws from an ambitious fielding side regularly shying at the stumps and hitting them quite often as well. After cheese sandwiches, Kieviten started to bowl (with the traditional wides in the first over from Peter). Several times the ball beat the bat with Nasir being particularly unlucky (including a great one handed catch by Adnan off a no ball). We knew we needed to get some early wickets but despite some plays and misses and shouts nothing came our way.
Martin, Chaudry and Raja all had a go, but the batsman found the boundary regularly and a couple of hard chances went down. With the customary rain falling for much of the innings Kieviten 2’s didn’t look that interested, couldn’t make any breakthrough and the run rate spiralled out of control. Peter came back but the ball landed in space, missed the edge or flashed to the boundary over the fast outfield.
In the end, we only saw two of their batsmen (one of whom made a good hundred) and we were outclassed. On a positive note, we saw some good fielding from Mark Sugden & Mark Yates, Stinchy looked particularly good behind the stumps… and we did finish quite early...
Next week is the key double weekend against VOC3 and HCC3 with the last chance to stay in 2A. Two wins needed!
Man of the Match - Nasir for his 72 runs.
I didn’t receive any nominations for bowlers to be man of the match….
Peter Arnfield

Free beers and snacks in the VIP tent. We enjoyed the view too.

Subject: Update on Terror Warning Levels
The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent terrorist threats and have raised their security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved." Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A bit cross." Londoners have not been "A bit cross" since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies all but ran out. Terrorists themselves have been re-categorized from "Tiresome" to a "Bloody nuisance." The last time the British issued a "Bloody nuisance" warning level was during the great fire of 1666.
Other European countries are as follows:
The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from "Run" to "Hide." The only two higher levels in France are "Surrender" and "Collaborate." The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France's white flag factory, effectively paralyzing the country's military capability.
Italy has increased the alert level from "Shout loudly and excitedly" to "Elaborate military posturing." Two more levels remain: "Ineffective combat operations" and "Change sides."
Germany raised their alert state from "Disdainful arrogance" to "Dress in Uniform and sing marching Songs." They also have two higher levels: "Invade a Neighbour" and "Lose.
" Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual, and the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels.
The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to deploy. These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy.
