The Bails 15 juni 2007
Hi All,
The club has reached its momentum and all committees are running at normal speed. Then when I think it’s time now to focus on my cricket I realise that De Kieviten’s Annual General Meeting is up next Thursday. All members have received an invitation by mail two weeks ago and I encourage all to attend.
In a pre meeting with the other sections we were asked by the main committee to agree with a € 5,= raise for both basic as well as section membership fee. Perhaps not that nice but I’ve noticed that costs of our section have risen substantially over the last two years, especially KNCB membership fees, umpire costs and the prices of cricket balls. Also we invested a bit more than usual buying new keeping equipment for both teams, some extra practice balls and a new scoreboard for our second pitch. Therefore we find this increase acceptable and will support this proposal to the membership next Thursday. If members disagree you can express this at the AGM on Thursday.
Further we regret inform you that our relationship with the golf committee has cooled down a bit lately after reminding them about earlier agreements made concerning use of the ground on Tuesday evenings. With some hesitation they’re fine with Thursday evening however Tuesday seems to be a real problem to them. We will try to explain this to you.
- On Tuesday evening holes 1 to 3 cannot be played as their driving range is open. Holes 4 to 6 are situated round our cricket pitch and therefore not available between 19.00pm and 21.30pm. Holes 7 – 9 are accessible but are not the nicest ones to come down to the club for.
- Secondly, a couple of years ago the hockey section introduced Monday night “bedrijfs/company hockey” in order to raise some extra cash for the club. With the cricket training on Tuesday evening and bedrijfshockey on Monday evening till ½ June the golf section would miss out on two consecutive evenings which we understand is frustrating to them.
With the introduction of bedrijfshockey our section agreed to train indoors on Tuesday evenings for as long as the Bedrijfshockey competition was on. This was not such a big deal for us as it’s still fresh at the start of the season and sometimes wet too. There were only a couple of times when it rained when there was a problem and that was because tennis coaches had to turn into the hall as well for coaching purposes.
Now new golf committee members have been installed it has become more complicated as they’re not familiar with the arrangements made. It became clear this year when the bedrijfshockey was finished even before the start of the cricket season. We informed the golf section to train outdoors right away as there was no need to train indoors. Reasons: the weather was beautiful, costs of use of the hall are high and there was no hockey.
We’re trying to work this out and have handed the issue over to a special committee at Kieviten that supervises in this sort of issues. It’s called ‘Terreinbeschikbaarheidscommissie / Grounds availability committee’. Hanny Swart is our representative and Martijn Sperling is head of this committee. We patiently await their verdict but trust this matter will be solved in a good way. In the mean time we expect all members to remain calm and respectful whenever you’re confronted about this by any golf player. Don’t get into details just pass them on to us.
Unfortunately we seem to experience more and more negativity towards the cricket from people of the golf section. Constantly they expect us to play at our reserve field at Blauw-Zwart instead of our main field at De Kieviten. What they don’t seem to understand is that we can’t because the spare field is only at our disposal for 6 weekends during the 20 weeks lasting season. We hope and will advise the golf section to communicate this news to their members better. In previous AGM’s members of the Golf section have expressed their wish to have the cricket section closed down because they’d like to claim the grounds permanently. We will try to reason with the committee of the golf section and let not things get out of hand. We wouldn’t be surprised if this topic will is risen at the next AGM and therefore encourage our members to visit the AGM and support your club.
There is some good news too. Bhavin Patel is back with the club and played his first match last weekend against Quick Haag. Soon we’re expecting some other lads back. Then our teams will be at full strength.
This weekend we’ve got both teams playing at home. The firsts are playing against Sparta 1 whereas the seconds are playing against HCC3.

KIEVITEN I + II (last Sunday)
A good win for the 1st team against Quick 2nds yesterday, and a much improved effort from our 2nds who sadly had to play with only 10 men and lost by 3 wickets in Rhoon.
The 1sts scored 185 a.o with the last wicket falling in the final over. Starring with the bat were Nissar (41 off just 25 balls), Malik (41)and Wasim (37 to celebrate the arrival of his frst child) being the main contributors on a difficult wicket against testing bowling. In reply Christian got us off to a flying start removing one opener (their coach) caught behind and sending the other to the local hospital after a lifter got through the grill of his helmet. The bowlers all did well with Arshad in particular bowling with great control on a low pitch to pick up 2 for 13 off his 6 overs. What was looking like an easy win suddenly came to life as their numbers 8 and 9 tried to hit their way to victory, but Malik and Christian came back on and picked up the last 3 wickets to leave us convincing 77 run winners.
The 2nds managed 153 all out with Mark Yates posting a 2nd succesive half century (58), Raja (19) and JW (16). In reply WCR got them for 7 with good bowling all round - especially from Peter (2 for 33 off 9, Martin 2 for 24 off 7 and Raja (0-43 not doing justice to his efforts).

KIEVITEN – MHC VOORHOUT
On Tuesday 12 June 2007 we arranged a 15 over match with the hockey players of MHC Voorhout. As the hockey players hadn’t much experience playing cricket we decided to play with two mixed teams. Teams were:

However the hockey players were struggling with the bat it turned out to be a nice competitive match with them diving at balls, taking catches and totals close to 100.
After the match Joke arranged a late supper and Voorhout flooded us with jugs of beer.
The next day we received many thanks from Voorhout and an invitation from them to come to Voorhout and play hockey as a return match. We gladly accepted this invitation and will organise this at the end of the season.

MATTHEW BIRCH
Hey JW,
How is it going with the plans for an old Kieviten versus the current squad match?
Cheers,
Matthew Birch

Dear Matt,
I haven’t actually received much response from the old members yet. The waiting is on them to respond to our call.
Till now the players that have confirmed are:
Bram van Alphen
Matthew Wright
Dave Hardy
Willem de Jonge van Ellemeet
And yourself
I’m counting on players like Chris Fletcher, Orville Senhouse Dave Branson, Vernon Sams, Erik van Alphen, Jeremy Scott and many others to contact us. As soon as we know when people are available then we can set a date and make arrangements. Maybe even you father and Dom would like to play.
COME ON WAKE UP YOU LAPWINGS!
DAVID CALLIN (KIEVITEN: 1986-1989)
Hello John,
Blimey, an old Kievits membership - now there's a good idea.
I qualify, playing for the fourth team - "May the Fourth Be With You!" (copyright George Bontenbal) - from 1986 to 1989. I have very very happy memories of those days.
Great website! I've even found my statistics, and pretty modest they are too.
1986 was my annus mirabilis, one game in particular in which I went in when we were 12 for 5 or something stupid like that (I exaggerate, I'm sure), recorded my highest ever score (34!) and took a crucial catch in their innings as well.
That was a good night.
And Jan Willem de Groot is your Voorzitter! He played for us then - Jan Willem de Groot, boy cricketer. I'm sure I remember (somewhat hazily, I admit) a 4th team night out in Noordwijk which ended up in us all sleeping in tents in Jan Willem's parents' garden.
And that was a good night too.
Anyway, I shall cease rambling, but if you could send me an Old Kievits membership form to complete I'd be very happy to do so. I'd love to know who else is still around.
I am back where I started, in the Isle of Man, and my postal address is Ballavargher Cottages, Patrick Road, St. Johns, Isle of Man, IM4 3BN. My son, who is nearly 12, has started playing for our village juniors team, and I'm happy and relieved to tell you that he seems to be better than I was.
All the best,
David

Hi David,
Carry on rambling mate. To see your name again immediately brings back some good memories.
Then I must have been 17 or 18 years old and being introduced to a very social life by my older team mates. The numerous pub crawls we did visiting Queen’s bar, Corniche, The Kings Arms and indeed Tony Hadnett’s bar in Noordwijk. (With us drunks in the garden that morning the viewers lost interest in buying my parents house.)
I remember you used to work with Sunandan Ray for Price Waterhouse. Also remember the matches we used to play against them. Clever of PW to hand out business cards to Kieviten players that allowed us to order free drinks at the bar. Don’t think we’d ever beaten them.
Kieviten IV players were: Martin Attwood?, Wim de Roos, David May, Pieter Bas Douwes Dekker, Jan Boezeman, Roland Wigman, Michiel Kerkhoven, Sunandan Ray, George Bontenbal, Alun Jones, Robert Haks, yourself and me. Some of them are even connected to the group and receive our weekly bulletin that we send out by e-mail. I’ll add your address to the list.
One of these days I’ll look for our team photo and put it on the site.
If you’d ever visit Holland again please contact or visit us. On August 22nd we have our annual cricket reunion at Kieviten. That is when our former players take the effort of travelling to Holland and play or watch a thirty over match but is mainly used as a social event for all to meet up.
Also we’re collecting good stories and photo’s to send to send to our group. If you have any please send us a good story or photo’s of that time.
I believe George Bontenbal still has the team mascot called Coen.
Nice hearing from you and hopefully we meet each other again.
Best regards,
Jan Willem
BABU ALAGAPPAN
Hi Kieviten friends,
We were blessed with a baby boy on 2nd June 2007 (Sat) at 15.51 hours. We have named him Pranav Alagappan. Thanks for all your well wishes,
the baby and the mother are recovering well.
Here are pictures of Pranav (5th day).
