Kieviten I got their first couple of points beating them at home. We remember the nice photo’s Roald van Geleuken took.
Kieviten II had a narrow escape in Abcoude. With Kieviten ploughing through the field throwing a ball of mud around Jinnah managed to score over 300 runs. At lunch the both sides agreed that playing like this was no fun. One of their players was worried that their first team was going to get upset the next day when they found out that their second team ruined their pitch the day before. After lunch Kieviten had a brief talk in the changing room and decided that it was best for us to put in a request to abandon the match due to rain.
With only Jinnah players and supporters in the (club)house JW and Ziabutt went in to defend Kieviten’s point of view. With all Pakistanis around Zia naturally did the talking. Without any comments they all quietly listened to his arguments. Meanwhile I had my fingers crossed.
Djalladjallaralalla captain …… Zia had suddenly turned quiet and had his arms up. Then all heads turned to me. Slightly puzzled about any arguments Zia had used I wanted to back him up and decided to confirm with a determined “INSHALLAH”.
Sort of amused their captain replied that he understood and without protesting he started filling in the match form and ordered his mates to roll up the mat. We thank Jinnah for their understanding.
It’s a more or less double of nothing situation this weekend as we play them both days. Last weekend we got 4 points out of 6, let’s go for the full 6 this time! Bets in gentlemen!

KAMPONG I – KIEVITEN I / KIEVITEN I – KAMPONG I ???
Last weekend Kieviten had a double header against Kampong of Utrecht. Saturday saw the teams meet in Utrecht and due to the recent rainfall the game was unable to go ahead on the grass wicket and was played on astroturf. Kieviten’s batting has been spasmodic this year to say the least, but with the arrival of more summery weather, they chose to bat first upon winning the toss. Chris Seisun and Nissar Ali were going along nicely until a mix up in running between the wickets saw Ali run himself out for 12. Jan Willem De Groot soon followed, LBW to Kampongs coach Lyndon Brown - 43 for 2 in the 11th over. Seisun was joined by skipper Malik Hussain and these two forged a good alliance of 84 before Seisun was unluckily LBW for a fighting 44 just as he appeared to be hitting top form. Mo Salman now joined Hussain and another good partnership of 76 followed and Hussain (75) and Salman (50) were both able to bring up their personal half centuries. Inevitably a late flurry of wickets fell in the pursuit of quick runs but an end score of 246 for 9 was easily Kieviten’s best of the season so far.In the Kampong innings, Chris Seisun found some disconcerting bounce in the pitch that resulted in a few extra runs as the ball disappeared over the Wicket Keeper’s head. However once the necessary adjustments were made Kieviten reduced Kampong from 34 for 0 to 42 for 3 - all wickets falling to Seisun, one bowled and good catches at slip and gully by John Colbran and Ben Wharton. Kampong Coach Brown now came to the crease and after some early playing and missing settled into a very composed innings. The off spin of Raja gave Kieviten some hope when he gained an LBW decision to reduce Kampong to 120 for 4. Brown was now joined by former Dutch international coach Peter Cantrell and these two proved too big an obstacle for a Kieviten attack weakened by availability problems. Combined with some very sloppy fielding Kampong were allowed to romp home with 5 overs and 6 wickets remaining. Brown finished unbeaten on 100 and Cantrell on 44. After such a good batting display this was a major disappointment to Kieviten and with a win loss record of 4 - 6 a better performance was needed on Sunday to stop a slide into relegation trouble.

Another day, another dollar. Kieviten again won the toss and chose to bat on their home patch which has so far this season been difficult to bat on. This time the start could not have been much worse as coach Chris Seisun was caught at slip for 0. However Nissar Ali was joined by Sajjad and together these two played in contrasting styles to rattle the score along to 80 in only the 13th over. Sajjad was then bowled for a gritty 17 in an unfamiliar number 3 position, and Nissar who had been plundering the bowling with some sublime hitting soon followed, unluckily out for 49 as he again just missed out on a maiden half century at this level. When Mo Salman came and went for 4, the promise of 80 - 1 had changed to a depressingly familiar 94 -4 off 16 overs. Malik Hussain and John Colbran carefully started the rebuilding job and were able to occupy the crease for 27 overs and took the score up to 200 before Colbran was stumped for 34. Malik brought up his 2nd half century of the weekend and was batting with more and more assurance before being caught for a superb 83. The remaining batsmen were able to come in and bat with freedom, and a final score of 253 looked like a defendable score with a full strength bowling attack and good fielding.Kampong’s reply was soon in tatters as Seisun took two wickets in his first over. A superb direct hit run out from Nissar Ali saw Kampong in more trouble at 13 for 3, and when Seisun bounced out Mars who fended to Bhavin Patel at short leg, Kampongs two main batsmen of the previous day, Brown and Cantrell were facing the music of the new ball much sooner than they would have wished for. After 5 overs of good tight cricket, Kieviten brought Patel into the attack. His left arm pace was something that hadn't been available the day before, and although Brown seemed unfazed after hitting a six, he was totally cleaned up next ball as a vicious incutter sent his off stump flying. When Cantrell was caught behind off Hussain in the very next over the game seemed to be up for Kampong. The remaining batting crumbled further as Hussain (3) and Sajjad bowled out the lower order. At 63 for 9 the game looked set for a very premature end. However as often happens in these situations, and Kieviten tried a few different bowling options before Wasim bowled Das in his first over to leave Kampong all out for 103.This was a superb bowling and fielding performance in total contrast to the day before. With 7 games remaining Kieviten have to show this sort of form more often to finish in the higher reaches of the league.

Kieviten’s 2nd team also recorded their first win of the season at MOP (Vught). Batting first they scored a big total of 243 -7 thanks to big contributions from Jan Willem De Groot (78 not out), Paul Miller (75 including 7 sixes) and Martin Steyn (25). Despite having to field with 10 men they reduced MOP to 182 all out with Mitul Luhar (3-13 off 4) and Paul Miller (4 -16 off 7) ripping out the lower order in quick time. John ColbranMOP I - KIEVITEN II
Vice captain Robin Schoew won the toss and chose to bat first:
Kieviten
01. M. Luhar - 13 (4,4,2,2,1) caught – Opened the batting positively and gave us a good start. Pity he lost his wicket so early.
02. G. Schoew - 4 (4) caught – His debut in the team. Opened with Mitul superbly, went for shorts soon and lost his wicket early. We would like to see more of him.
03. A. Singh - 11 (2,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1) bowled - Never really got his eye in but occupied the pitch long enough for us to restart after losing early wickets.
04. J.W. de Groot - 78* (44x1, 11x2, 3x4) - “I more or less ran 125 runs and occupied the pitch for 45 overs.” (♫ I will walk 500 miles ♫)
05. N. Alam - 3 (1,1,1) caught – Was 40 minutes late at CS and got lost following JW to the ground. While preparing for the match he was not there and therefore dropped to five instead of one down. We haven’t seen the best of him but know he can do better.
06. P. Miller – 75 (7*6, 3x4, 5x2, 11x1) stumped – Amazing shots with Guidy’s new bat. His partnership of 105 with JW lasted for 20 overs.
07. M. Steijn – 25 (2x4, 5x2, 7*1) lbw - Difficult stage for Martin to get in. He was expected to hit from the start and run many two’s. Did a perfect job taken the circumstances!
08. Robin Schoew - 5 (2,2,1) bowled – Very positive on the pitch. On his last ball he announced a big six. Instead he got bowled by a full toss.
09. K. Singh – 1* - Was there with a big smile on his face. Great attitude and is growing as a player.
10. A. Butt - dnb 11. Mazhar Raja never showed up. Although he called us at 11.00am when we arrived at MOP in Vught announcing his unavailability because his back was aching.
