The Bails 11 mei 2007
The start of our cricket season has set of a bit like this video:
As we don’t run a youth section our club relies on the arrival of new ex-pats and players switching clubs to maintain a large enough membership to pull up two teams. Although the KNCB only allows players to switch clubs between 1st September and 15th February we always experience great difficulties in finding new players in that time. Attending ex-pat fairs, hanging up posters in local pubs around Den Haag while networking and drinking huge quantities of beer we often don’t.
Ever since we went on tour and hit the first couple of balls in the nets we’ve suddenly been noticed by people in the area. In stead of climbing on car roofs they show up at training and sometimes even apply for membership directly. All want to play! Not only Asians (or elephant as displayed in the video) but also people from the UK, South Africa and Australia working for Shell! (Thanks Marty Buttigieg and keep up the good work. We hope you’ll get plenty for PGS too.)
Luckily this year new players are presenting themselves by phone, email or attend training out of the blue. Young Karn, who’s a student at the American School, is now pondering on how to bring a couple of this mates to Kieviten. We’re really glad with these developments and keep our fingers crossed that there are many more to follow. Of course the transfer period expired back in February and it’s sometimes difficult to convince the KNCB that we’re not flying in professionals dressing up our teams. Studying the KNCB regulations carefully we still manage to register all these people legally.
The latest recruit is a West Indian man (40+) living in Almere called Frank Beckles. Last year he came down to Kieviten a couple of times supporting Kieviten I and his former KNCB colleague Kobus Olivier. Then looking like a chubby tourist visiting Disney World, he now returned to the club smartly dressed and losing not only his facial hair but also 20 kilo’s. Well done Frank! In the 90’s Frank was contracted by the KNCB as a youth coach and according to our first team player and former KNCB youth talent Hamed Altaf a good one too. Frank says he needs two more weeks to prepare himself for matches and is keen to play. We now have a sufficient number to send out two teams. Although our experience tells us that we need plenty more to back up a potential next year’s loss.
Through email we intend to send you our weekly match reports and general announcements. Also we’d like you to check out the new www.kieviten.nl and link to our Kieviten Yahoo Group for banter and other business. We hope you’ll all support us this summer again and enjoy the weeklies we are sending you.
Supporters! Please don’t let us down visiting our matches in the Nachenius Tjeenk Twenty20 Cup. After all there is a money prize involved of € 10.000,= for the winner. De Kieviten can surely use this money. If we win the cup: the drinks are on me.

HERCULES 1 – KIEVITEN 1
A disappointing start to the season last Sunday saw the first team lose by 1 wicket. It was a good game of cricket in which we competed very well, and having them 151-9 chasing 178 expected to win. Beware the injured batsman though - the number 11 would usually bat higher up but pulled a muscle in his back earlier in the game. Together with a Monty Panesar look alike they batted very well to take the points from us. Good performances by Ben (41*), Waseem (31 and 2-20 off 8.5), Christian (3-27 off 10) and Mo (24), and a good all round fielding display were not quite enough on the day.

Please send an email to kievitencricket@... advising your availability for the 13th and 17th.

NEW WEBSITE: WWW.KIEVITEN.NL
Slowly but steady we’re making progress. Thanks to Sully (your picture on http://www.kieviten.nl/nl/cricket/kieviten-op-tour/ipswich-2003/) brought back a lot of memories) and others we managed to spice up our site a bit. However we need more pictures and stories.
Perhaps some of the old lads can send in stories on the Cayman tour or Willem has a nice anecdote on the club’s first steps: The Belgian tours.
Richard Goodchild: can you ask Dave Blake to stir up his writing talents again (and send us his email address) and perhaps send us a piece yourself?
Tineke Kolff please send us the pictures of the early days (that even go back to 1948).
Next year the cricket section exists 60 years. That means 60 years of memories and material for the website.
Come on you lapwings send in your comments and photo’s for our site!
AGENDA:
TRAINING EVERY TUESDAY & THURSDAY AT 19.00PM!
NACHENIUS TJEENK TWENTY20 CUP : 25TH MAY, 1ST JUNE; 8TH JUNE, 15TH JUNE
Visiting the KNCB a week ago I met Paul-Jan Bakker, current coach of Dutch National XI. He informed me that Quick Haag was looking forward to playing the Twenty20 matches as they had a similar thing going last year with other teams from that area. Apparently are these matches well attended by many supporters at Quick Haag, HCC and HBS.
Therefore we call upon all our supporters and members of De Kieviten (hockey/tennis/golf) to back us up these matches if you can. We don’t want it to be silent when we take another HCC wicket or Malik hits Schiferli for six at Quick.

FRIENDLIES
SGS is on August 22nd
Old Kieviten – Kieviten : Ever since we’ve started playing SGS in the new format (having old players around) some of you have expressed their wish to have an Old versus New Kieviten cricket match. Recently we discussed this more detailed and are now considering in organising this match. In order to be sure that we have enough players on the day we want people to let us know what they think about this plan and put forward their availability. Its success depends on you!
Kieviten – MHC Voorhout : Finally JW’s hockey team MCH Voorhout (and Frans van Egmond’s too) played their first cricket match ever years ago and are keen to have another go at it. Anyone interested to chuck a couple of ball at these hockey players please let me know. For us this could be a good opportunity to expand our membership with a couple of pinch hitters. Further details will be announced later.
Erik van Driel (Kieviten first team hockey coach) informed me that he’s interested in having a similar match against his team. You see; There’s OMNI for you!
