The Bails 10 Augustus 2007

Hi All,

A good weekend for the 1st team who won two of the tightest games of cricket you could hope to see. How you can win two games without anybody reaching 20 is something of a mystery but that's what we managed! On Saturday we played at Jinnah and bowled them out for 97 (great bowling and fielding effort all round with Nimish Pujara 3-14 off 10, Chris Seisun 2-11 off 10 and Malik 3-18 off 10 standing out). In reply all seemed well at 47 - 1. But a combination of a dodgy pitch, some exceptional bowling from the bearded Jinnah coach (S. Umer) and wobbly middle order batting saw us crash to 66-7 with Ben Wharton also retired hurt after having his much abused big toe crushed yet again by a yorker. Ben went back out with a runner and 2nd team stalwarts Martin Steijn (9) and Karn Singh (12*) supported him well allowing us to  eventually got home by 2 wickets with Ben’s top score of 17 not out being a great lesson on how to stick things out on a bad pitch (he batted for something like 35 overs).

(scorecard - http://mscm.arlsupport.com/pub/2007/Eerste_Klasse/19_EK_106.htm)

We visited leaders HCC on Sunday, and with a better pitch and good outfield expected some big scores. Again our bowling and fielding was in good order and we ran through their top order with Bhavin Patel and Malik swinging the new ball at will. After that all our bowlers did exceptionally well in the hot conditions to maintain good line and length. We chipped away and eventually dismissed them for just 100. This target was no formality though against a good bowling attack - especially as we were missing 3 of our regular top 6 (Nissar Ali, Mo Salman and Ben). Nevertheless again we got to 44- 1 (Chris 17, Wasim Abbas 15) and people were starting to wonder whether the beach or the pub would be the best venue for post match celebrations. A few overs later we were 45 - 6 (yes that’s 5 wickets falling for one run!). John Colbran and Bhavin got us back on track and when Bhavin fell Karn came in and scored 6 in 3 balls. Fazil and John continued to eat into the total but when John fell for 19, we still needed 17 from the last wicket. Nimish and Fazil Mahmoud were made of strong stuff and nudged our way home to claim another great victory which keeps us mathematically interested in the title race.

(scorecard - http://mscm.arlsupport.com/pub/2007/Eerste_Klasse/15_EK_72.htm

The 2nds were defeated by Asvion. Batting first we slumped to 15 for 4 but Adrian Blacker (welcome back) made a fighting 32 and Martin Steyn (50) and Mark S (21) got us back in the game. We were not able to bat out the over's though and eventually were all out for 169. In reply we got in the game with Asvion at 41-3. However a dropped catch allowed them to recover and the next wicket didn't fall until the score had reached 90. In the end we picked up another wicket but it was a story of what might have been.

This Sunday the first team are home to Rood & Wit whilst the second team are home to WCR (match will be played at Aloysius College Den Haag). We need to know early about availability as we need to apply for dispensation to play people in the 2nd team who have played 7 or more games in the 1st team. The 2nds still have a decent chance of surviving but we do need to pick up some points and this means putting out the strongest teams possible. So please respond with your availability by the end of Wednesday.

We think it looks something like -

YES - Christian, Nissar, Hamed, Malik, John, Nimish,  JW, Wasim, Sajaad, Bhavin, Arshad, Peter, Stinchy, Mark Y, Adnan, Nasir, Moshin, Raja, Zia, Chaudry, Karn

NO - Windy, Mo, Mitul

MAYBE - Fazil, Ben, Nilesh, Adrian, Martin, Mark Sugden

A message from Malik about 1st team selection. With competition for places high, training attendance is required this Thursday. If you cannot make it for a good reason make sure you let Malik know before Thursday.

CRICKET IN NIEUWE REVU

TOUR 2008 – SOUTH EAST ASIA - TOUR OF THE LEGENDS!

COLIN WASON

Jan-Willem,

what's this about a tour to Asia...wonderful...brilliant idea from Sully....I've just returned from Malaysia where I actually played a fine game aaginst a wanderers side from Sussex near Cyberjaya, a major "silicon valley" city in Malaysia. I was part of an international Shell Oil eleven with most of the team hailing from the UK (where else) and of course Indians from Bangalore (I've no intention to tour there so hopefully no one will suggest a tour to India.... serious probs with Indian belly, never mind Delhi belly).

It's the rainy season in Malaysia but as luck would have it, we managed a 25overs per side bash.  I'm seriously interested in such a tour. As an ex-Kievit, I consider it a responsibility to be part of any such tour. Keep me posted. (Please).

Any news as yet on the SGS game? I've oiled my bat and prepared my jock-strap so forza Kieviten.

Groetjes,

Colin

JAMIE O’SULLIVAN

Gents,

In all seriousness, I floated this idea as a bit of a pipe dream without any great expectations of there being sufficient takers. It seems however that we have half a side or more within a week !  Admittedly most of these are former Kievits, but given the efforts JW has put into the ‘old Kievit’ network this might be a fantastic experience of bringing together old and new in a never to be forgotten ‘Super-Tour’.

So far we have serious interest from the following:

Sully (Singapore)

Kevin Tasker (Aus)

Anmol Sud (India)

Colin (Aalsmeer)

JW (Kieviten Clubhouse)

Anton Joiner (Bad shirts)

I am sure Ben Wharton would be up for it as he could combine it with a trip to his folks in Australia, I can’t see JC missing this one, and Hamed clearly needs some Asian action to remind him of his roots! If Seiso is coming back for the 2008 season it’s just a short hop for him to join up with us here, he could then fly back with you guys to prepare for the season, so no extra cost in his usual airfare.

So that would give us 10 already. I am sure I could get Steve Atkinson involved in Hong Kong (Hopefully on the pitch as well) and as I said there’s a couple of top lads her who would shackle up with us for the duration or at least a couple of games. So what started as a bit of a semi-serious idea may well be something that could take shape.

I will need to leave it to you guys to sound out opinion in NL and try to get realistic commitments from people who would be up for it.  I would also recommend a tour fund as previously suggested so no-one ‘Does a Phillips’ at the last minute due to costs.

Then if I can get a rock solid confirmation then I will begin to arrange things out here in terms of games, hotels etc. Could be a cracker!

Cheers

So you work on Hong Kong and arrange Steve then John & I will sort out the rest of the world and work on Chris Fletcher and friends.

Jacques Chirac, The French President, is sitting in his office when his telephone rings.

"Hallo, Mr. Chirac!" a heavily accented voice said. "This is Paddy Down at the Harp Pub in
County Clare , Ireland . I am ringing to inform You that we are officially declaring war on ya!"

"Well, Paddy," Chirac replied, "This is indeed important news! How big Is your army?"

"Right now," says Paddy, after a moment's calculation, "there is Meself, me Cousin Sean, me next door neighbour Seamus, and the entire Darts team from the pub. That makes eight!"

Chirac paused. "I must tell you, Paddy, that I have 100,000 men in my Army waiting to move on my command."

"Begoora!" says Paddy. "I'll have to ring ya back.

Sure enough, the next day, Paddy calls again. "Mr. Chirac, the war is still on. We have managed to get us some infantry equipment!" "And what equipment would that be Paddy?" Chirac asks.

"Well, we have two combines, a bulldozer, and Marphy's farm tractor."

Chirac sighs amused. "I must tell you, Paddy, that I have 6,000 tanks and 5,000 armored personnel carriers. Also, I have increased my army To 150,000 since we last spoke."

"Saints preserve us!" says Paddy. "I'll have to get back to ya."

Sure enough, Paddy rings again the next day. "Mr. Chirac, the war is still on! We have managed to get ourselves airborne! We have modified Jackie McLaughlin's ultra-light with a couple of shotguns in the
Cockpit, and four boys from the Shamrock Bar have joined us as well."

Chirac was silent for a minute and then cleared his throat. "I must Tell you, Paddy, that I have 100 bombers and 200 fighter planes. My military bases are surrounded by laser-guided, surface-to-air missile Sites. And since we last spoke, I have increased my army to 200,000!"

"Jesus,
Mary, and Joseph!" says Paddy, "I will have to ring ya back."

Sure enough, Paddy calls again the next day. "Top o' the mornin', Mr. Chirac! I am sorry to inform ya that we have had to call off the war."

"Really? I am sorry to hear that," says Chirac. "Why the sudden change Of heart?"

"Well," says Paddy, "we had a long chat over a few pints of Guinness and finally decided there is no fookin' way we can feed 200,000 French Prisoners!
 Have a nice day!

KIEVITEN XI versus SGS XI

Dear All,

August 22nd is our annual match against SGS. It has become more of a tradition that this day is a reunion for old Kievits to meet. Apparently this year many are away on holidays. Nevertheless we expect to pull out a strong team again.

Especially for the ones that are not available for SGS this year we’re organising a pre-SGS ‘borrel’ and perhaps diner on 15th August. Former members Sunandan and Monica Ray-Hoogkamer (from the eighties) are over from Long Island (New York). They’re only here for one week and would like to take this opportunity to see some of their old team mates again and perhaps meet some new Kieviten members too.

Sunandan was captain of our famous 4th XI “May the Fourth be with You”. (Yes we used to have that many teams.) Both are looking forward to their trip and meeting you all on August 15th.

As we are coexisting with the golf section and Wednesday is their night for use of the grounds we’re afraid we cannot arrange a cricket match for you on the 15th. However our teams train on Tuesday (indoor) and Thursday (outdoor) and anyone interested to have a bat or bowl is free to join in for either training or perhaps a quick six a side.

Program Pre-SGS - August 15:

  • Drinks 18.30 pm at Kieviten
  • Diner later

Program SGS - August 22:

  • Breakfast at 10.00am at Kieviten. (Please let us know if you’re attending so we can adjust our order at the bar.);
  • Players are expected at 12.00am;
  • Match starts at 13.00pm (40 overs).

Breakfast & lunch will be prepared by Angelina (The Difference) and served in the Clubhouse.

The match ball is sponsored by Tineke Kolff-Sutherland

Evening: After the match we’ve booked diner at 20.30pm at restaurant De Lof der Zotheid in Den Haag.

Details on LdZ: http://www.lofderzotheid.nl/

In order too make sure that we’re well prepared in case large numbers show up please let us know if you’re coming to SGS, pre-SGS or both. We would like to inform the bar on time. Last year we had a great time at SGS and intend to build this event bigger every year. We look forward to your reply.

Cheers,

JW

JW,

yes...Michiel had mentioned this and of course I've seen the info in the newsgroup regarding Sunandan and I'd be delighted to be involved on the 15th. Wonderful! I wasn't certain if I would be in Malaysia or not but as luck and circumstances would have it, I expect to be in the Netherlands for the next month or two.

Thanks for my inclusion in the SGS fixture, dinner to be included. Will that be the same venue as last year? All in all... special times once more with Kieviten. Lekkerrrrrrrrrrr. regards and best wishes,

Colin

JIM BOSWELL

Hello J-W,

I received a message from Willem van Ellemeet today saying that you wanted to phone me but didn't have my phone number. In his message he gave me a number for you which I tried but it was an incorrect number.

In case you want to contact me then this is most easily done by email but my number is England (09 44) 1458 446265. I was at Taunton today for the International Tournament and met up with Dave Hardy and Monique Hardy while their son was playing against Worcestershire. Lovely day (for a change!) and the whole week is forecast to be fine so they should have a good time.

I'm still undecided about coming over for the SGS Reunion Day as normally on my trip I also see my daughter and her family in The Hague at the same time but this August they are on holiday in Italy. In addition we have visitors arriving that week and I am expected to meet them at the airport. I'm still pondering the situation as I would like to be there again.

Until I hear from you then,

best wishes,

Jim

-

Dear Jim,

The reason I intended to contact you was exactly that. I wanted to see if we could meet at King’s College for the Cricket Festival there.  Pity we missed each other. Nice to hear though that you’ve met Dave and Monique at Taunton.

I arrived later that day and went to Halse first to check into the New Inn. I went to Taunton the next two days and had a great time in the UK enjoying the tropical weather, cricket, golf and food. Surely envy you living in such a nice place after visiting Taunton last week.

I understand that your visit on SGS-day is still uncertain. Hope all is well and look forward to seeing you again (some other time).

All the best.

JW

MATTHEW BIRCH III

Hey Jan-Willem,
Bad news... we had cocked up the work planning and unfortunately I will have to work those days. No getting around it I'm afraid.
Real shame as I was looking forward to visiting the old club / players again. Guess it will have to wait till next season when (hopefully) I am in the area and can join full time.

MATTHEW BIRCH II

Ok gents,

My days off are booked so count me in!!!

Kind Regards,

Matt Birch

MATTHEW BIRCH I

 Hi Jan-Willem,

What is the exact plan for the 22nd? Is it an evening 20/20 match or something? If you can let me know the details I'll try and get the day / days off work to come up for it.

Yes I am still working for Daimler... till the end of the year at least. Busy decorating the flat at the moment so it can go on the market, as soon as it is sold I'll be moving up to your neck of the woods and looking for a new job. Just hope it sells quite quickly as I want to be moved before the end of the year hopefully.

No idea what Dom is doing, hopefully he can make it so I can put him to shame!!!

Matt - I know from experience that it takes a lot to put him to shamel!!!

-

ALAN BACON

Jan-Willem,

I'm afraid I'll be away from 11th until 31st August.

Good luck with it!

Best regards / Mit freundlichen Grüßen / Sincères salutations

Alan Bacon
 - Sorry to hear Alan. Thanks for your support as an Old Kievit. Hope to see you again next year.

-

JEREMY SCOTT

 Hi JW,

I'd like to play.

Cheers,

Jeremy

-

Hi Jer,

I bet George Moon doesn’t like to hear this. The last couple of months he's been calling all 700 SGS's to built a better team from last year's. As you turned 40 this year I suppose that's one more off his list.

George: Remaining are Dicky Boelhouwer, Frank de Bruijn, Dave Hardy, Erik Bakker, Ton and Daniël Eldering, Frans van Egmond, ... that aren't committed to the Kieviten XI yet. (Boys please call us: +06-54775267)

Will you and Jane stay for dinner afterwards?

-

HANNY SWART

Ja, ook dat wil ik doen voor mijn vakantie. Ik ga definitief van 30 juli t/m 21 augustus.

Zie ik je 22 augustus bij SGS, ontbijt weet ik niet, maar ik kom wel.

SHIRE SPORTS TOURS ESTONIA PREVIEW"Bat & Ball in the Baltics"

in this issue
A really really great new cricket tour experience!
Ice with your cricket sir?
Baltic summer tours!
A really really great new cricket tour experience! I just got back from Tallinn in Estonia checking out the details for our cricket tours. The medieval city of Tallinn is just stunning. The hotels we use are charming old buildings, all tastefully refurbished. They're really comfortable and stylish, right in the centre of the Old Town, with plenty of 'Après Cricket' all round. You can enjoy everything from humungous pitchers of beer at the traditional Estonian pubs to full-on nightlife at the various clubs.  You can even get bear or moose meat for dinner!  And there are lots of unusual activities to enjoy on days when you're not playing cricket -the highlight of my trip has to be shooting AK47's and other automatic weaponry at Mr Death's Shooting Academy!

Ice with your cricket sir? In February I'm running some crazy 6 a-side Ice Cricket Tournaments played on Lake Harku just outside Tallinn (or indoors in the former Soviet missile factory if the ice isn't thick enough!) all followed by legendary after tournament parties.  This is a great opportunity to take a small covert group to check out Tallinn for a future summer tour or if you really like the idea why not get the whole club involved and enter two or more teams of 6?  3 night packages are £222 plus flights.  Limited places available - click here for full details.

Baltic summer tours! You might not connect the Baltic with sun-kissed sands and blue seas, but on Tuesday I was enjoying a few cold beers on the beach bar terrace looking out on the fabulous white sands surrounding the silvery bay of Tallinn - we're even thinking of fixing up some beach cricket tournaments there soon! The main cricket ground in Tallinn is unusually in the middle of a horse racing stadium, and you get a procession of pretty women riding round the cricket field, as well as some good cricket and good laughs.  As well as this, there's a really excellent new cricket ground being prepared for 2008 in the grounds of a manor house, just a half hour scenic drive from town. 4 night summer tours to Estonia cost around £200 plus flights - a bit more than Amsterdam or Prague, but really special and you get a lot of value. For more details: call 0800 9121619, email us, or click here to check out our pdf (please allow time for page to load). Really looking forward to fixing a great Estonia experience for your club!   Best regards Ed Middleton PS - Other great new cricket tour ideas in France - Brittany from £219 inc flights, Midi Pyrénées from £279 inc flights. Also winter sun in Cyprus from £395 inc flights - check them out on our website!
