1967
Kieviten XI 1967
The people on the photo are, as far as I can recall, from left to right:
Wallace Bednall, an accountant and spin bowler. Probably umpired in this match due to injured right hand. Left Holland in the '70's and I last encountered him in Singapore in 1979.
Peter Birse, genial businessman and probably our best batsman at the time. Joined with Ian Churcher's contingent from the Commonwealth Cricket Club. Father of Tim Birse who died relatively recently. Not certain when Peter died but I met his widow, Ann, at Tim's funeral.
John Kitt, worked at ESTEC, quickish bowler and forceful striker of the ball. Returned to England around 1969 and last heard of living in Twyford near Reading, England.
Jan Sillem, Dutch accountant and one time pianist with the Dutch Swing College. Our regular wicket keeper and number 11 batsman.
Clem Morris, Welsh electrical engineer and very occasional player. Now lives in France at Eymet in the Dordogne.
Ian Churcher (Goudkievit), De Kieviten cricket section chairman for many years. Was instrumental in helping to resurrect the cricket section around 1967 by encouraging some Commonwealth Cricket Club members to join. Previously played with Antwerp Cricket Club. Was the General Manager of North Sea Ferries from the time of the building of their first ships, Norwave and Norwind, until retiring to the UK in the early 1980's with his wife Nita who helped behind the bar for many seasons. Ian died, on a golf course I believe, in April 1989.
Jim Boswell (Zilverkievit), Civil Engineer with a firm of engineering consultants in the oil, gas and petrochemical and De Keviten cricket section secretary for many years during the late 1960's and '70's. Joined with Ian Churcher's contingent from the Commonwealth Cricket Club and Antwerp Cricket Club. Now retired and living in Somerset, England, but frequently to be found at the Somerset County Cricket Ground in Taunton.
Richard Tanner, Translator with an international organization, very useful batsman and spin bowler. Returned to England I believe in the early 1970's.
John Steen, another Translator with an international organization. English despite his surname and fluent Dutch. Very useful batsman but not known to bowl. Was the driving force in 1969/70 behind the move to convert the Astra Cinema on the Langstraat in Wassenaar to an International Club which succeeded but was relatively short lived due to lack of support.
?????? A young Dutchman and the only person pictured who's name I can not recall. Maybe others will know him.
Gerrit van der Molen, worked somewhere (Government?) in the support of the Dutch Film industry and was De Keviten cricket section secretary when I joined the club and from whom I later took over. A useful opening batsman and occasional bowler. His wife and young daughter were regulars behind the bar and collecting the glasses of thirsty cricketers in the old club house. Unfortunately Gerrit died in young middle age.
David Banks, also worked at ESTEC and was a talented opening batsman and useful occasional bowler. Departed the club and the Netherlands for England with his wife Vivienne and two daughters at the end of the 1970 season to Winsford, Cheshire, where he and Viv still live.
