Introduction
Basically Kieviten is a multi-sport club which has sections for cricket, golf, tennis, hockey and squash. Part of the membership fee is for joining the club, and then for each sport you play you pay a fee to that section. This makes it economical to play more than one sport if you do have interest in any of the other sports on offer. As for the cricket section, we currently run a 1st and 2nd team. The 1st team plays in the 'Eerste' or first class of Dutch cricket. Confusingly this is actually the 2nd division as there is a premier league above us. The cricket is however of quite a good standard and very competitive. This is 50 over cricket and matches start at 11:00 AM on Sundays. First team players are expected to train every week in general although we are well aware that pressures of work and family sometimes make this impossible. Our second team plays a couple of levels lower and whilst still taken seriously is a little more relaxed. These games are also on Sundays but typically are only 40 over games which may start a little later in the day. 2nd team players are still encouraged to attend midweek training but it is not a problem if they have to put family/job/social life first. Its an ideal way for people to get back into cricket who haven't played for a few years. It always amazes me how many people actually get back into playing cricket in The Netherlands having come from countries where cricket is more of a main stream sport.
Our first team will also take part in a regional 20-20 competition this year with games taking place on Friday evenings. We have been placed in the "Den Haag" section along with the four Premier League clubs of The Hague. This will be a real challenge for us but should be a good experience. As an expat club we are used to coping with the comings and goings of expat life so every year we tend to lose players and gain new players. We also realise that many people want to play cricket but can not commit to play every week and want to play a little more occasionally.
Well this has turned into a bit of a 'War and Peace' type email and I don't want to overwhelm you with information. If you do have any questions though please just ask. ThanksJohn Colbran
